Ivy Topiary Christmas Tree Workshop


Learn how to create a live decoration for the holidays at a workshop Saturday December 5 from noon-2pm at the Brown Trout Gallery, 5841 Sacramento Ave in Dunsmuir. Sign up at the Brown Trout. Dro
p-ins ok while supplies last. Ancient gardeners in Roman times and later in monestaries in Europe were called topiarus which is Latin for landscape gardener. Training plants to grow in shapes involves weaving together the stems and clipping or training the foliage. Many varieties of plants are suitable for topiary, but ivy is a traditional favorite. Japanese cypress 'Tsukumo' is an irregular bun-shaped plant with fine texture and dense foliage and is an excellent candidate for shohin bonsai. Learn how to transform these Sawara Cypress (chamaecyparis pisifera) trees into little jewels in the same styles and forms as the bigger bonsai.

Cafe and Darryl "The Butcher" Hansen of Thriftway Market are getting ready for a September 13 tug-of-war "grudge match" between Sacramento and Dunsmuir avenues. The match will be part of the festivities at Dunsmuir's 2nd Annual "The Block Rocks!" citywide block party. There will also be live music, Middle Eastern dancing, kids' activities, and tasty treats from local restaurants.

band creates a polyrhythmic swirl of multiple Latin American music forms (boleros, cumbias, salsa, tango, mambo and the indigenous Peruvian valses criollos) and combines them with Indian, Arabic and Celtic flavors. Then they add just the right touch of jazz improvisation and dynamics, and the sizzling result is what one Incendio fan calls edge of your seat music.

Dunsmuir's Railroad Heritage




The Dunsmuir Railroad Display Room, ajacent to the Amtrak Depot, is open to the public the third Saturday monthly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured are locomotive photographs, memorabilia and artifacts. Mr. Jamie Carlberg's diorama of Dunsmuir's Round-house is on display. On July 18th, the Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Historical Society will draw winners of two Amtrak donated Coast Starlight tickets and two quilts. Winners need not be present to win. The recent PIE SOCIAL by the Depot Society was a successful fund-raiser. Forty-seven pies were made by Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta pie-makers; the event was sold out! Funds raised continue funding the maintenance of the Depot (the only Siskiyou County stop), the Railroad Display Room, and the renovation of rooms to house the Dunsmuir Museum.

Charlie Musselwhite at the Botanical Gardens

Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite returns to Dunsmuir July 25. Legendary blues harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite headlines The 3rd Annual Mossbrae Music Festival on July 25
at Dunsmuir City Park's scenic Botanical Gardens Stage. Ages 16 and under will be admitted free with a paid adult age 21 and over.

A fine selection of gourmet sandwiches, salads, fruits, desserts, hot foods, wines, microbrews & sodas will be available. The concert is a fund raiser for the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. With 22 Blues Music Awards to his credit and 8 Grammy nominations, harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite has truly earned legendary status as one of blues music's most important artists. Charlie has performed and recorded with Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, John Lee Hooker and many more. His latest CD Delta Hardware reflects on Charlie's tougher edge, first evident on his breakthrough 1967 release, Stand Back. Most recently, Living Blues magazine readers once again honored Charlie naming him Most Outstanding Musician
(Harmonica) in their 15th Annual Reader's Poll.

This is a limited capacity event with general admission lawn seating. Gates open at 3:30 PM. Bring a blanket or chairs. No coolers please. Car pooling is encouraged.
