This is a City-wide, all volunteer senior benefit concert. Net proceeds from ticket sales and concessions will benefit senior assistance projects through the Dunsmuir Community Resource Center. There is a real need of seniors for firewood and utility support in the snowy winter months. A portion of the proceeds will go to student athletics and programs run by Dunsmuir High School Boosters. Tickets are $28 in advance and $35 at the door. They can be purchased online at http://dunsmuir.com/concert/ or by calling 530-235-2177. Dunsmuir, California – A little over 40-years ago, Dunsmuir was treated to one of the hottest, most dynamic bands of the 60s -- Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Three remaining members of the original band return on September 11 for a benefit concert in the historic Dunsmuir City Ball Park. Gates opens at 3 p.m. with the bands set to perform at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00.

Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, James Gurley, and Chuck Jones formed the band in the summer of 1965 in a Victorian mansion/boarding house in the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco. The iconic Janis Joplin joined the band in June 1966 with Dave Getz replacing Chuck Jones that December.

Big Brother quickly became one of the most influential bands of the psychedelic music movement.

The band played in Dunsmuir in 1967 at an all-ages dance club called the Little Black Egg. At that time, they played many fan favorites including “Piece Of My Heart,” “Ball & Chain,” “Down On Me,” “Summertime,” and “Turtle Blues.” Many youngsters who had to sit on the curb and listen outside are thrilled that they're back.

When Big Brother returns to Dunsmuir with Albin, Andrews, and Getz in September, they will reprise many of those favorites as well as performing newer hits like “Hold Me.” This historic return takes place on the same ball field Babe Ruth played an exhibition game in 1924. Sit in the historic wooden grandstand or on the field to watch the band on stage at home plate.

The Fabulous Blackwell Brothers open for Big Brother. This high-energy band performs a roaring mix of rocking blues, funk, and neo-psychedelic rock. Featuring Harry and Debbie Blackwell on guitar and vocals, Mark Carnes on bass guitar, Vanda Raven Moon on keyboards, and Harvey Williams on drums, the Fabulous Blackwell Brothers is passionate, powerful, and always danceable.

The Lottery, a 3-piece experimental rock band that draws heavily on psychedelic rock influences fills out the bill. Lottery members Ryan Marchand, Jake Wesolowski, and Paul Kreizenbeck released their debut album “Empires” in February 2009 and have an enthusiastic young following.

They wrote, produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered it on their own, completing the work in February 2009. It is available on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and Amazon.

Early sponsors include the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce, Dunsmuir Rotary, Northland Cable Television, and attorney David Hicks.

The music and the spirit of Big Brother are timeless. They appeal to all ages as demonstrated by the popularity of their album, and the cover for “Cheap Thrills” having been voted “Best Album Art of All Time” by Wired magazine readers just this past July.

Bring blankets or lawn chairs and be prepared for a magical afternoon and evening of nostalgia, old and new music, and top entertainment when Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Fabulous Blackwell Brothers, and the Lottery perform at the historic Dunsmuir Ball Park on September 11.

You'll enjoy good food, cheap thrills and a rocking good time according to local party animals who didn't want to be quoted by name because they were around in the 60s. Other events that day in town will fill the day if you aren't awed by the awesome scenery and rivers in the area, including Clara Bellino showing off her songstress magic at the Dunsmuir Brewery Works after the concert. Event gates open at 3:30pm. Allison Scull and Victor Martin will perform at 4:30pm while John Lee Hooker Jr. begins at 6pm.While food, beer, wine soda and water is available, no coolers or picnic baskets are allowed. It is recommended that you bring a blanket to sit on the grass.

Tickets cost $27.50 pre-sale and $33 at the gate. Those sixteen years of age and younger, and under can attend for free with parents. Where the pink and white petals of dogwood trees flutter and the sound of the Sacramento River roars in shady botanical gardens, the Fifth Annual Mossbrae Music Festival will present an exceptional, fun summer event. Benefiting the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce, John Lee Hooker, Jr. will be in concert at the Dunsmuir City Park on Saturday, July 24^,th,2010.

With such veterans as Charlie Musselwhite and Al Stewart, as well as Grammy-nominee Duke Robillard and African dance band Albino in years past, the Mossbrae Music Festival is gaining recognition as a high quality summer event. For this year’s event, John Lee Hooker Jr. continues this tradition as well as the legacy of his legendary father, John Lee Hooker, Sr., with his own style of blues—a style he calls "two parts Rhythm and Blues, one part jazz and down home blues.” Guitarist, Angelo Santi, keyboardist Elfer "Dog," drummer Mike Rogers, and bass player George Lacson will be joining Hooker Jr. for this performance.

John Lee Hooker Jr. was born in Detroit "Motor" City with Delta blues-filled blood running through his Motown veins. He was exposed to the life of the blues from a young age. At only eight years old Jr. performed on Detroit's WJBK radio and knew from that moment that he wanted to follow the path of his father and become a world-class musician. Touring alongside Hooker, Sr. throughout his teens, Jr. had already performed in prestigious venues such as Detroit's Fox Theatre with acclaimed musicians like Jimmy Reed by the time he was 16. In 1972, an eighteen year-old John Jr. was singing vocals alongside his father for the recording of Hooker, Sr.'s album Live at Soledad Prison (ABC Records). Twice nominated for a Grammy Award, John Lee Hooker Jr.’s CD releases also include: Live in Instanbul, All Odds Against Me, Cold as Ice, and Blues with a Vengeance.

Bill Wasserzieher of Blue Revue describes Hooker Jr.’s delivery as “so dead-on that listeners might begin to wonder whether the tales he tells are true. fundraiser concert, with the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra Saturday, June 19.

Each year The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra graciously performs for the town of Dunsmuir in the most beautiful concert setting in Northern California, along the banks of the Upper Sacramento River in Dunsmuir's city park.

This year’s theme is Rhythms Del Rio. From the sunny shores of the Caribbean to the dark alleys and "tango joints" of Argentina, our musical journey travels through the Americas, south and north. Our program features virtuoso percussionist Chris Froh performing the sizzling marimba concerto by Brazilian composer Ney Rosauro, dances from Panama and Astor Piazzolla’s “Nuevo Tango” masterpiece. The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra will also be presenting the world premiere of our fifth annual Youth-for-Youth commission, a new work for string orchestra by Berkeley native Gabriella Smith.

Dogwood Daze

Dogwood Daze commemorates the planting of 52 Dogwood trees on Sacramento Avenue, Childrens' Park, and at Hedge Creek Falls Park. All were purchased by private citizens, most in memory of a loved one. A listing of the trees will be located on Sacramento Ave. The Dogwood Tree was designated as the official tree of Dunsmuir in 1985.

Rob "The Grinder" Wallace (at left) of the Brown Trout Cafe and Darryl "The Butcher" Hansen of Thriftway Market are getting ready for a September 13 tug-of-war "grudge match" between Sacramento and Dunsmuir avenues. The match will be part of the festivities at Dunsmuir's 2nd Annual "The Block Rocks!" citywide block party. There will also be live music, Middle Eastern dancing, kids' activities, and tasty treats from local restaurants.

The band creates a polyrhythmic swirl of multiple Latin American music forms (boleros, cumbias, salsa, tango, mambo and the indigenous Peruvian valses criollos) and combines them with Indian, Arabic and Celtic flavors. Dunsmuir's Railroad Heritage

The Dunsmuir Railroad Display Room, ajacent to the Amtrak Depot, is open to the public the third Saturday monthly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Featured are locomotive photographs, memorabilia and artifacts. Mr. Jamie Carlberg's diorama of Dunsmuir's Round-house is on display. On July 18th, the Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Historical Society will draw winners of two Amtrak donated Coast Starlight tickets and two quilts. Winners need not be present to win. The recent PIE SOCIAL by the Depot Society was a successful fund-raiser. Forty-seven pies were made by Dunsmuir and Mount Shasta pie-makers; the event was sold out! Funds raised continue funding the maintenance of the Depot (the only Siskiyou County stop), the Railroad Display Room, and the renovation of rooms to house the Dunsmuir Museum.

Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite returns to Dunsmuir July 25. Legendary blues harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite headlines The 3rd Annual Mossbrae Music Festival on July 25
at Dunsmuir City Park's scenic Botanical Gardens Stage. Ages 16 and under will be admitted free with a paid adult age 21 and over.

A fine selection of gourmet sandwiches, salads, fruits, desserts, hot foods, wines, microbrews & sodas will be available. The concert is a fund raiser for the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center. With 22 Blues Music Awards to his credit and 8 Grammy nominations, harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite has truly earned legendary status as one of blues music's most important artists. Charlie has performed and recorded with Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, John Lee Hooker and many more. His latest CD Delta Hardware reflects on Charlie's tougher edge, first evident on his breakthrough 1967 release, Stand Back. Most recently, Living Blues magazine readers once again honored Charlie naming him Most Outstanding Musician
(Harmonica) in their 15th Annual Reader's Poll.

This is a limited capacity event with general admission lawn seating. Gates open at 3:30 PM. Bring a blanket or chairs. No coolers please. Car pooling is encouraged. Tribute to the Trees at the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens

With the sounds of the Sacramento River in the background, the meadow of the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens will provide the delightful ambience of a country garden in the heart of Spain for the 19th Annual "Tribute to the Trees" Festival de las Flores, a concert by the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, Benjamin Simon, Musical Director and Conductor, featuring soloist, Peter Lemberg, oboe. This fundraiser for the Botanical Gardens, scheduled for June 20, 2009, includes a gourmet supper enjoyed alfresco.
